It has taken a while for us to really start looking at the different standards, as it is extremely over whelming thinking of where to start. This week, I decided to take the jump. I started creating worksheets to help both us and staff with moving towards reaching the standards. I also began creating electronic portfolios for the program and the classrooms to start saving documentation for the standards.
This week we began looking at Standard 1: Relationships. There are 6 sections to the relationship standard and each section has 3-10 assessment items to them. There are 4 different ways these standards are assessed, Program Observations, Program Portfolio, Classroom Observations and Classroom Portfolio.
The 6 Sections in the relationship standard are Building positive relationships between teacher and families, Building positive relationships between teacher and children, Helping children make friends, Creating a predictable, Consistent and harmonious classroom, Addressing challenging behaviors, and Promoting self-regulation.
Where most of this will be assessed by observations, we will spending a lot of time in the classrooms, observing to look at what is successful and what opportunities we have for growth.
As overwhelming as it was at the start, now that we have a system in place, it is extremely exciting to jump into this and make our program better.
